The History of Dickens

The legacy of the Dicken family in the business world of Stockton dates back to the late 19th century. The story began in 1878 when Harry Thomas Rodgers, a saw doctor, opened a small ironmongery in Stockton. Fast forward to 1924, and Alice Dicken, the great grandmother of Jonathan Dicken, the current director, took over the reins. She successfully expanded the business and set it on the path to success.

In the 1960’s, the company underwent a significant transformation when Jonathan’s father, Albert Dicken along with his brothers Robert and Terrence relocated the business to a more expansive one-acre site on Portrack Lane, Stockton.

Five years later, they acquired a nine-acre farm opposite the site, which they developed and transformed into the first DIY hypermarket in Britain. This store quickly gained popularity with the public in the early 70’s.

Jonathan joined the family business in 1988, and around the same time, the Company acquired a five-acre site on Portrack Lane, where they built a computer-controlled central distribution warehouse. Today, that same site is home to Dickens Self Storage. Although the DIY business was eventually sold to B&Q in 1999, the Dicken family’s entrepreneurial spirit could not be contained.

In 2005, Jonathan started Dickens Self Storage, a testament to the family’s enduring legacy in the business community of Stockton. Jonathan is proud to continue the family’s legacy and carry on the tradition of excellence that has defined his family’s businesses for generations.
